UF Moving Day

UPDATED

150 Beds. 150 Dressers

promote. move. store

Friends of CCC,

Good news: We’re still getting beds and dressers to redistribute to neighbors in crisis.

Bad news: UF Housing still needs a few weeks to get the furniture ready for us.

Great news: You’ve still got time to make some space in your home, organization, church, or business to store a few dressers or mattresses. We need 10-20 folks to make available as little as 5×10 feet for a month or two. Or you can donate specifically for short-term storage with the PayPal link at cccgainesville.org, or at PO Box 14582, Gainesville FL 32604.

If you’ve volunteered time, truck, or storage already, many thanks. UF Housing has committed to at least one-week notice on a firm pickup date, which I’ll pass along to the CCC community. We do hope we get the chance to work with all of you as this project comes together.

Thanks
Nick Dunn
CCC Furniture Donations Coordinator

Engage

At Christians Concerned for the Community this year we have been emphasizing communal involvement, asking everyone “How can we continue to develop our community together?” In March of 2012, CCC and the Christian Community Development Association together hosted Engage, featuring panel discussions from local community leaders, to help us negotiate this question.
Nate Ledbetter from CCDA gave an informative talk about the guiding principles of Christian Community Development, and Mo Leverett gave a rousing talk about inward piety (purity) and outward piety (concern for the poor). Najah Adams and Jacob Larson both gave inspiring talks about not leaving your religion at your office door, whether you work in a religious profession, legal services, or fashion design. Paul Emory spoke about making sure that we are prepared both emotionally and practically to work with cross-cultural communities. The panel discussions which comprised the second half of the evening could have gone well beyond our official 9:00pm closing time.
It was such a pleasure being a part of this large community discussion about how to continue to develop our community together, and how to move forward into a future when, as Mo reminded us, we have worked ourselves out of jobs, allowing newly empowered local leaders to take the lead.

An mp3 of the panel discussion, featuring Mo Levrette-founder of Desire Street Ministries, Paul Emery-Missions Outfitter at Grace Methodist Gainesville, Najah N. Adams Esq.-Staff Attorney with Three Rivers Legal Services , Jacob Larson-Associate Pastor Vineyard Gainesville, and Nate Ledbetter-FCS Ministries Atlanta is available here.

Fantastic Home Facelift Kickoff

TBA

Each fall before the annual Fantastic Home Facelift work weekends Christians Concerned for the Community hosts our biggest social event of the year, the Kickoff. This is a time for us to share the work of CCC with the community, to discuss the plans for the Fantastic Home Facelift, and to fellowship with volunteers and local churches and organizations.
Since this year is the 25th Anniversary of Christians Concerned for Community, we hope to make it the biggest Kickoff event so far! Check back for more information soon.

Fantastic Home Facelift

TBA

Each year for the past 4 years Christians Concerned for the Community has hosted an event to help our neighbors give their home a “facelift”; this can include one or more major repairs (like widening a doorway or repairing an unleveled porch), scraping and repainting the outside of the house, and planting some greenery. In the third year CCC mobilized volunteers to help three local widows.

In 2012, our fourth year, we hope to be able to work with four of our neighbors. This work takes place over two weekends, and it simply can’t happen without teams of volunteers.

5 Days 5 Ramps

In April of 2012 Christians Concerned for the Community worked with local volunteers and community groups to build 5 ramps for 5 neighbors. The goal was to promote:

  1. Awareness of the need for safe and accessible entryways for persons with disabilities.
  2. Our neighbors with disabilities and our neighbors who are seniors deserve our respect and concern.
  3. Everyone’s ability to work together to develop our community.
